JOB TITLE: Consultant
DEPARTMENT: Radiology
REPORTS TO (TITLE): Head of the Radiology Department (HOD)
Primary Objective
· Provide specialized radiological services in diagnostic imaging to facilitate the accurate diagnoses of disease and injury through medical imaging techniques such as X-rays, Fluoroscopy, computed tomography (CT), Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Mammography and Ultrasound.
· Work under the direction of and report to the HOD.
· Liaise with physicians and radiographers in day-to-day operations of the department.
Number of Persons Managed/supervised and their Positions
· Direct reporting as per the approved organizational structure.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
· Assess, diagnose and appropriately treat patients within the clinical setting.
· Ensure that the patients receive optimum care and satisfactory service from radiographers.
· Receive and respond to referrals from clinicians in a timely manner.
· Interpret and prepare all the radiology reports for the use of referring physicians, the police or the coroner and dispatch them on a timely basis and ensure that the reports reflect a high standard of competency and accuracy.
· Report all radiology examinations and communicate critical reports to the referring clinician.
· Hold meetings and discussions with the patient’s families and caregivers.
· Verify the appropriateness of the investigation requested.
· Execute the procedures as per established guidelines.
· Sequence examinations according to priority.
· Prepare police and/ or coroner’s reports as required.
· Maintain patient confidentiality.
· Share responsibility for data protection arising out of the use of computers and maintain good practices in the handling of confidential information.
· Ensure total adherence to infection control policies and practices.
· Guide and perform radiology procedures within department, at bedside or in OT as and when required.
· Assist and complement the HOD in resolving administrative and clinical issues.
· Provide on call/ emergency duties as required.
· Ensure Informed Consent is obtained prior to the provision of care.
· Maintenance of continuous measurement and reporting in terms of - access, discharge, service provision and clinical care.
· Ensure the participation and representation in relevant committees/meetings.
· Process correspondence related to patients and respond to patient complaints.
· Perform other administrative duties related to patient care.
· Adhere to established protocols, guidelines and practice standards pertaining to the area of clinical practice.
· Liaise with other clinicians engaged in patient care.
· Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialties and participate in regular clinical meetings and other activities.
· Participate in developing protocols and guidelines for general and specific examinations.
· Undertake regular upgradation of protocols and procedures.
· Attend and contribute to regular departmental and academic meetings.
· Ensure participation and commitment in the different quality improvement, risk management and patient safety activities in the hospital.
· Contribute to achieving and maintaining key performance indicators for the department.
· Engage actively in the clinical audit and other clinical governance processes.
· Participate in and facilitate production of all data/information required to validate delivery of duties and functions and inform the planning and management of service delivery.
· Contribute to the development of efficient pathways of care in accordance with the current best practices and national guidelines.
· Participate in the unit’s strategic approach towards education, training, and development, while considering the requirements of each staff, service requirements, and the availability of in-house and commissioned education programmes.
· Engage in research activities when opportunities arise and ensure the use of evidence-based practice within the department/unit.
· Provide teaching and oversee medical students and junior physicians in the care and treatment of patients and performance of required procedures within the department.
· Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks and participating in professional organizations.
· Adhere to organisational policies and procedures to ensure ethical care.
· Provide inputs in procurement of capital equipment.

· Provide on call/ emergency duties as required.
· Perform additional duties as required and assigned by the HOD
Academic Qualifications and Experience
· Registered medical practitioner with St. Lucia Medical & Dental Council.
· A Postgraduate qualification in Radiology from a recognised institution
· Preferred minimum of 3 years of experience as a Radiology Consultant.
· Experience and qualifications in Interventional Radiology preferred/regarded favorably

· Expert knowledge of relevant radiology equipment and machinery.
